The Ashenveil Sump: Dregs of the Old Quarter
The Old Quarter sinks. Each night, the labyrinthine storm drains beneath the city convulse, belching toxic alchemical sludge that warps flesh and stone alike. A forbidden symbiosis has formed: the city's black-market alchemists, the 'Nightsoil Men,' use the ancient, forgotten sump as their private dumping ground, while a desperate community of outcasts—the 'Sumpborn'—have learned to harvest the most potent residues, trading mutated reagents for survival. The eruption grows worse. The city guard wants the drains collapsed. The Sumpborn want their home and livelihood preserved. You descend into the toxic darkness not as a hero, but as a mediator of poison.
Chronicle Prelude
The Ashenveil District's central plaza is cordoned off. A massive, iron grate is embedded in the cobblestones, from which acrid, glowing green-yellow vapors rise. City Watch officers in plague doctor masks keep back crowds of the worried and the curious. The entrance to the sump is here, but it is locked by the Watch until a 'final solution' is decided.
Environmental Traits
The alchemical sludge has reached a critical saturation point deep in the sump. An imminent, catastrophic eruption threatens to flood the entire Old Quarter with mutagenic sludge, creating a permanent, toxic wasteland within the city walls. The players must navigate the sump, uncover the true source of the escalation, and decide the fate of the two interdependent factions before the next eruption occurs.
