The Frostfire Paradox
The Ice-Crystal Caverns were once a pristine network of frozen tunnels, home to delicate crystalline ecosystems. Now, they are choked by an unnatural proliferation of frost slimes—gelatinous, mindless creatures that feed on ambient magic and encase everything in hyper-dense ice. An expedition from the Hearthfire Collective, an order of desperate alchemist-miners, ventured deep to harvest rare thermal crystals and ignite their experimental Blazing Alchemical Fuel to create a permanent heat source. Their success was their doom: the fuel's magical resonance mutated the cavern's native slime into the frost slime plague, which now seeks to extinguish all warmth. Players arrive as outsiders hired to break the blockades and 'cleanse' the caverns, only to discover the true source of the infection and the ethical horror of the fuel itself.
Chronicle Prelude
The expedition's outer camp, 'Ember's Last Stand,' is a fortified cluster of heated tents and workshops at the cavern's mouth. It is surrounded by walls of jagged, growing ice and patrolled by the grim, frostbitten survivors of the Hearthfire Collective. The air smells of ozone and burned reagents. The Collective's leader, Foreman Roric, desperately pleads for aid to reignite the primary fuel depot, believing it is the only way to melt the ice and save their trapped comrades deeper within.
Environmental Traits
The central crisis is a self-reinforcing cycle: the frost slimes are drawn to and empowered by the ambient magic leaking from the Hearthfire Collective's alchemical processes. Re-igniting the fuel will cause a catastrophic chain reaction, purging the slimes but permanently scarring the cavern's ecosystem and possibly collapsing the tunnels. Leaving the fuel dormant condemns the remaining miners to a slow, frozen death. The caverns themselves are a character—a beautiful, dying labyrinth of singing crystals now being silenced by encroaching ice.
