The Goblin Plight of Rivervale and the Cryptic Mine
Rivervale, a once-prosperous mining town, is caught between a rock and a hard place. The goblin tribe of the Kragtooth clan, driven from their ancestral warrens by a creeping, unnatural blight, now encroaches on the town's outskirts, desperate for food and shelter. The townsfolk, led by the pragmatic Elder Maeve, see the goblins as a plague to be eradicated. Unbeknownst to both, the source of the blight—and a potential solution—lies sealed within the town's abandoned Cryptic Mine, a place shrouded in local superstition and guarded by ancient, malfunctioning wards. Players are thrust into this volatile standoff, forced to navigate a landscape where survival trumps morality and every choice has grim consequences.
Chronicle Prelude
The players arrive at the gates of Rivervale, a fortified town of damp timber and quarried stone nestled in a river valley. The air is thick with the smell of woodsmoke and tension. A hastily erected barricade of carts and sharpened stakes marks the border of the 'Goblin Warrens,' the shanty camp of the displaced Kragtooth clan. Town guards eye the camp nervously, while goblin sentries watch from the shadows. Elder Maeve's hall, the largest building, sits at the town's center, its windows glowing late into the night.
Environmental Traits
The entire region is suffering from the 'Witherblight,' a creeping gray rot that sickens crops, poisons water, and maddens wildlife. It emanates from the sealed Cryptic Mine. The ultimate goal is to reach the mine's heart, understand the blight's origin, and decide the fate of both Rivervale and the Kragtooth clan—by curing the blight, weaponizing it, or finding another, darker path.
