The Scarecrow Vigil of Bone-Windmill
Veteran adventurers are drawn to the remote hamlet of Bone-Windmill, where animate scarecrows patrol the night, and the village's great mill grinds not grain, but bones. The villagers speak of a 'necessary evil' sealed below, while a desperate sect believes only total destruction can end the curse. The truth is layered in dust, blood, and ancient pacts.
Chronicle Prelude
You arrive at the edge of Bone-Windmill Village under a perpetually overcast sky. The air smells of damp earth and old, dry grain. A single, massive stone windmill dominates the horizon, its sails still. Neat rows of scarecrows stand sentinel in the surrounding fields, their heads slowly turning to track your approach. The village gate is open, but the handful of visible villagers watch from shuttered windows with a tense, weary vigilance.
Environmental Traits
The region is under a centuries-old pact. The Skeletal Grinder, a necromantic engine beneath the mill, must be fed the bones of the dead to appease the 'Harvest Spirit' and ensure the land's fertility. This has created a culture of ritualized death, bone-reclamation, and the animate Scarecrow Guardians that enforce the village's isolation. Recently, the pact is fraying; the Grinder's hunger grows, and the Scarecrows are becoming more aggressive.
