The Strangling Embrace of Greatwood

# Fey# Dark Fantasy# Investigation

In the damp heart of Greatwood, homes are not built—they are grown. For generations, the villagers have lived in symbiotic, animated vine-houses, tended by the colossal Guardian Totem Tree at the forest's heart. But a creeping madness has taken root. Vine-houses have begun to constrict, strangling their inhabitants in the night. The village carpenters, the Oakwrights, have felled the Guardian Totem Tree, claiming its heartwood is the only material strong enough to build new, safe homes. They see this as pragmatic survival. The remaining druids and fey-touched, the Verdant Circle, see this as an irreversible genocide against the living forest, a murder of their god. You arrive as the last hope to untangle this living nightmare, where every branch is a potential noose and every shadow holds a desperate secret.

tech icon Chronicle Prelude

The Greatwood Village square is a morbid tableau. Rigid, dead-looking 'Oakwright Houses' of plain timber are being hastily erected alongside the still-twitching, leaf-choked shells of the original vine-homes. A palpable tension hangs between the grim-faced carpenters sharpening their axes and the wild-eyed, vine-wrapped druids whispering to the remaining flora. The air smells of sawdust, sap, and fear.

tech icon Environmental Traits

The entire region is a living ecosystem in violent metamorphosis. The felling of the Guardian Totem Tree has sent a shockwave of dying magic through the ley lines. Flora is either withering into black rot or growing into aggressive, predatory forms. The vine-houses, now untethered from their master tree, are reacting to the village's collective fear and violence, lashing out at their occupants. The crisis is not a monster to be slain, but a catastrophic feedback loop between nature and civilization.
