The Tortoise's Wake: Broken-Bridge Station
The Stoneback Pass, a vital trade artery, has been severed. A colossal, living rock tortoise—a creature thought mythical—has been lured from its ancient slumber. Its shell, disguised as a rocky outcrop, now blocks the pass, and the creature's potent, soporific breath, weaponized by a desperate gang, incapacitates all who approach. You are not heroes called to save the day. You are survivors, mercenaries, or investigators stranded in the wreckage of Broken-Bridge Station, forced to navigate a war between those who created this disaster and those who seek to exploit it. The tortoise is not a monster; it is a victim, and your choices will decide its fate and the fate of the region.
Chronicle Prelude
You awaken in the muddy, chaotic courtyard of Broken-Bridge Station, a fortified inn and toll house built into the remnants of an ancient stone bridge. The air is thick with the acrid scent of strange pollen and the low, ground-shaking groans from the pass. The bridge is gone, shattered by the tortoise's emergence. Wounded travelers, suspicious mercenaries, and panicked merchants crowd the stables and common room. The two factions are already here, their agents watching you from the shadows.
Environmental Traits
The region is paralyzed. The tortoise's soporific pollen-cloud, controlled by the Bandits of the Grey Wake, blankets the eastern approach to the pass, creating a death-sleep zone. The western approach is controlled by the 'Preservers,' a druidic circle that sees the tortoise as a sacred avatar of the earth. Neither side will allow passage. The station is a powder keg of trapped souls, and the only way forward is through the tortoise itself.
