The Verdigris Granary Crisis
The automated Verdigris Granary, a marvel of gnomish engineering that processed and stored grain for the region, has gone haywire. Its massive packing machines, designed to compress grain into dense bales, are now crushing anything in their path - livestock, structures, and people. The gnomish inventor, Sprocket Gearwright, vanished days before the malfunction, leaving behind only cryptic notes. Two factions have emerged from the crisis: the Gnomish Preservationists who believe the machines are sacred technology that must be preserved at all costs, and the Settlement Defense Coalition who demand the machines be destroyed to save the remaining population. The truth lies somewhere in the forgotten deactivation keyword, buried within the inventor's conflicted legacy.
Chronicle Prelude
The players arrive at the refugee camp on the outskirts of the ruined granary district. Smoke rises from crushed structures, and the distant grinding of metal on metal echoes through the air. The camp is a tense standoff between gnomish engineers trying to establish safe zones and human settlers demanding immediate action.
Environmental Traits
The region faces total agricultural collapse if the automated granary cannot be either deactivated or repurposed. The packing machines are spreading outward from the granary complex, converting the fertile farmland into compressed, lifeless terrain. Both factions believe they hold the key to survival, but their methods threaten to destroy what remains.
