At a secluded country estate, the sudden death of the patriarch coincides with a cessation of all household timekeeping. The investigator must analyze physical discrepancies and the fraying social fabric to distinguish a singular criminal act from the desperate, shameful cover-ups of the innocent.
Initial Crime Scene
The scent of lavender water and stale pipe tobacco hangs heavy in the air, clinging to the velvet curtains. A profound silence, broken only by the faint, distant drip of water from a copper pipe, presses in from the hallway where a grandfather clock stands with its pendulum still. Your gaze settles on the study door, slightly ajar, revealing the edge of a dark, spreading ink stain on the carpet and the silent face of another stopped clock within.
Crime Scene Environment
The lighting is a dim, steady glow from gaslight lamps, casting long shadows that pool in the corners. The air is cool and carries a slight, oppressive humidity, making the scent of old paper and dust palpable. Acoustic density is high; the absence of the house's normal, synchronized ticking creates a hollow, listening stillness, punctuated only by the settling groans of the old wood and the distant drip.
Investigation Constraints
Late Victorian/Edwardian mechanical tools only: hand-wound clocks, wind-up music boxes, inkwells and quill pens, gaslight lamps, mechanical door latches, oil lamps, candle-snuffers, manual typewriters (if present, rare). Communication is by handwritten letters delivered by staff or post, telegrams from the local town. Locks are simple pin-tumbler or warded mechanisms, opened with ornate brass keys.
