The Unbound Oath
In the magically-bound frontier town of Greyhaven, the death of land-owner Silas Croft has set off a cascade of actions among the townsfolk. An independent forensic arcanist is called to examine the scene, where a network of personal debts, professional secrets, and panicked attempts to conceal private transgressions have contaminated the initial evidence.
Initial Crime Scene
The heavy, wood-paneled door to the study swings open on groaning hinges. The first sensation is the smell of old paper and beeswax, undercut by the sharp, spent tang of ozone. A single, dim enchanted lantern on the desk flickers uncertainly, casting long shadows. Your eyes adjust to take in three markers: a large, jagged breach crudely plastered with red mud and straw on the east wall; an open ledger of enchanted vellum on the desk, its surface showing a dark ink smudge; and the glint of brass from a clockwork lock on the side door, its keyhole marred by fine scratches.
Crime Scene Environment
The lighting is low and inconsistent, sourced from dim, flickering enchanted lanterns that fail to dispel the room's thick gloom. The air is dusty and oppressive, holding a damp, heavy weight. Acoustic density is high; sounds are muffled and absorbed by the old wood and stone, but the creak of floorboards and the whisper of disturbed vellum carry with unnatural clarity.
Investigation Constraints
Bound-scroll contracts enforced by minor geas-compulsion; quill-and-ink record-keeping on enchanted vellum that subtly resists forgery; pneumatic message-tube systems powered by bound air-elementals; rudimentary clockwork locks with alignment-keyed enchantments; scrying mirrors requiring ritual incantation and specific reflective surfaces.
