The Unfinished Chime
The sudden death of a master horologist in his workshop is attended by an independent investigator. A web of inherited debt, suffocating marriages, and social reputation entangles the household, where every party's desperate actions have created a labyrinth around the circumstances.
Initial Crime Scene
A threshold crossed into a room of polished silence. The faint, sharp scent of brass polish cuts through the air, mixing with the dry dust of old wood. A steady, collective ticking pulses from a dozen unseen mechanisms. Visuals fix upon: the intricate, dust-catching interior of a large case clock against the far wall; the faint, permanent indentations in the carpet from long-resident furniture; the precise, layered dust pattern on a high mantelpiece clock.
Crime Scene Environment
The sandbox is defined by a warm but uneven gaslight glow, casting long, wavering shadows. The air is cool and dry, with a low acoustic density—the dominant sound is the rhythmic, obsessive pulse of ticking clocks. All textures and mechanisms adhere to Victorian-era analog systems.
Investigation Constraints
Victorian-era mechanical and analog systems: wind-up clocks, pocket watches, manual printing presses, handwritten ledgers, gas lamps, coal-fired heating, mechanical doorbell systems, sealed wax envelopes, and telegraph communication. No electrical or digital devices.
