The Cinder Volcano's dormant fury has awakened not with lava, but with swarms of magma beetles. These creatures, drawn to the volatile Hearth-Core Shards embedded in the fertile ashen soil, are devouring the crops of the surrounding Cinder Basin. Adventurers, claiming the shards as treasure, have exacerbated the crisis. Now, the Basin's people starve while the beetles rage, and the mountain's heart grows unstable. You arrive in Ashen Rest, a fortified farming town, to a landscape of burnt fields, desperate whispers, and two factions who see you as either savior or plunderer.

Chronicle Prelude

Ashen Rest, the primary fortified farming town in the Cinder Basin. It is built around a geothermal spring, with thick stone walls to keep out beetle swarms. The air smells of sulfur and ash. The central square holds a dry, cracked communal well and a bulletin board plastered with warnings, bounty notices for beetle parts, and missing persons posters for lost scavenger parties.

Environmental Traits

The Cinder Basin is facing simultaneous ecological and economic collapse. The magma beetle swarms are growing, destroying all agriculture. The Hearth-Core Shards, volcanic gems that regulate local geothermal energy, are being plundered, destabilizing the region further. The ultimate goal is to stop the swarm at its source and decide the fate of the shards—and by extension, the Basin's future.

A burly, grim-faced human in dented, soot-stained Guildwork armor. His beard is short and singed, and he carries a heavy pick-axe with casual menace. He eyes strangers with open suspicion and greed.
Magma Beetle Queen
An immense, grotesque beetle-like creature the size of a house. Her carapace is a mosaic of black, volcanic rock and glowing magma-filled cracks. Multiple complex eyes burn with a malevolent, ancient intelligence. She radiates palpable waves of heat and fury, and the very ground trembles with her agitation.
Tom, the Scorched Farmer
A middle-aged man with calloused hands, a gaunt face, and eyes that hold a deep, exhausted sadness. His clothes are worn and patched, and he constantly brushes ash from his shoulders. He stands near the sealed town gates, staring out at the scorched fields.
Magma Beetle Worker
A dog-sized insectoid creature with a dark, chitinous exoskeleton cracked with faint orange lines of heat. It mindlessly excavates tunnels and defends its territory with a burning bite.
Prospector Scout
