The Amber Vein Blight: Timber, Tobacco, and the Crawling Pedestals

# Wilderness# Intrigue# Dark Fantasy# Magitech

The once-prosperous logging town of Amber Vein is dying. A bizarre crystalline fungus has infected the ancient Ironwood trees, causing them to petrify and spawn chitinous, beetle-like creatures from their trunks—'Pedestals' that consume the very timber the town relies on. Worse, the miners deep in the Amber Shaft have discovered a forbidden fungal tobacco, 'Glimmer-leaf,' that grants visions of the fungal network's heart but slowly transforms its users into crystalline hosts. The party arrives as outsiders, drawn by rumors of a unique magical reagent or a plea for help, only to find two desperate factions locked in a brutal struggle for survival and a terrifying ecological mystery at its core.

tech icon Chronicle Prelude

The town of Amber Vein: a grim, timber-and-stone settlement built around a massive sawmill, now half-idle. The air is thick with sawdust and a faint, sweet-sickly smell. Buildings are reinforced with scrap metal against Pedestal attacks. Miners and loggers eye each other with suspicion. The central well has been sealed after its water developed a crystalline shimmer.

tech icon Environmental Traits

The fungal blight is not merely a disease but an attempt by a subterranean fungal intelligence (the 'Amber Mycelium') to assimilate the forest and its inhabitants. The Pedestals are its defensive/offensive constructs. Glimmer-leaf tobacco is its psychic vector, drawing smokers into its network and slowly crystallizing them. The ultimate goal is to either halt the assimilation (destroying the Mycelium and likely killing the land) or find a way to coexist or control it, dooming the town to transformation but creating a new, alien ecosystem.
