The Blind Scholar's Frenzy
The Shimmering Caverns, a network of geodes and psychic crystal formations, are in chaos. Crystalline spiders, normally reclusive and docile, have entered a nesting frenzy, their psychic chittering causing madness in nearby settlements. The cause: a blind scholar from the College of Whispering Silks has ignited rare, extraplanar incense within the caverns' heart. He seeks to permanently open a stable portal to the realm of pure thought, believing it will bring enlightenment. The spiders, whose webs are psychic conduits, are reacting to the influx of alien thought-stuff, driving them into a reproductive overdrive that will soon spill out and consume the region's sanity. You are hired by desperate locals to stop the frenzy, but the scholar and his followers believe they are on the cusp of saving the world from mundane suffering.
Chronicle Prelude
The frontier town of Geode's Rest, built into the shadow of the Shimmering Caverns. The air hums with a faint, dissonant psychic frequency. Refugees with vacant eyes crowd the streets, and guards patrol nervously. The town council offers a bounty to end the threat at its source.
Environmental Traits
The region faces a psychic plague of escalating intensity. If the Blind Scholar's ritual completes, the boundary between the Material Plane and the Psychic Vortex will shatter, transforming the caverns and everything within miles into a hellscape of crystallized madness. The spiders are both victims and a vector for the spreading insanity.
