The Broken Chains of the Underdark Menagerie
Deep below the Spine of the World, a colossal, forgotten menagerie built by a long-dead archmage has been breached. The magical runes binding its monstrous inhabitants have shattered, releasing them into the wild caverns. Two desperate factions now vie for control: the Emerald Conclave, druids who believe the beasts must be freed to restore a primal balance, and the Crucible Wardens, a splinter group of the Arcane Brotherhood who believe the runes must be rebuilt to prevent a monstrous tide from flooding the surface. The beasts themselves, warped by millennia of confinement, are neither evil nor innocent—they are weapons, refugees, and cataclysms given flesh. The players are caught in the crossfire, forced to decide what constitutes 'balance' and what price is worth paying for control.
Chronicle Prelude
You emerge from a collapsed tunnel into the Dim Market, a flickering, makeshift settlement of scavengers, outcasts, and agents of both factions built in the husk of a giant, dead purple worm. The air is thick with the scent of fungi, damp stone, and desperation. Whispers of 'whips' and 'broken runes' hang in the smoke.
Environmental Traits
The region is a geo-thermal labyrinth of phosphorescent fungi forests, geothermal vents, and the ancient, crumbling architecture of the Archmage's Menagerie. The primary conflict is the escalating, chaotic release of powerful, destabilized beasts. The ultimate goal is to reach the Menagerie's Core and decide the fate of its master control system—the Forge of Binding.
