This year, the lanterns fell as cinders, and those who touched the ash were marked with cryptic, painful inscriptions. The inscriptions are a curse, whispering madness and slowly petrifying the flesh. You are not heroes called to save the world, but investigators drawn into a tangled web of desperation, where the cure may be worse than the disease.

Chronicle Prelude

The Grand Plaza of Aethel, normally a riot of color and laughter, is now a scene of silent horror. Stricken citizens huddle in quarantine tents, their skin marbled with glowing, thorny script. The city watch is overwhelmed, and whispers of blame point in every direction. The air smells of ozone and old paper.

Environmental Traits

The curse, known as the 'Cinder Script,' is spreading. Its origin is traced to the ancient Lantern Frames, now revealed to be conduits for a dormant, parasitic entity from the Shadowfell. The city must choose: sacrifice a part of its populace to perform a brutal, ancient sealing ritual, or risk total annihilation by seeking a mythical 'Unwritten Cure' that lies in the heart of the entity's own realm.

Gate Spirit Obbet
A vaguely humanoid shape composed of swirling, ink-dark smoke and glinting fragments of mirror. It hovers before the Shadow Gate, its 'face' a shifting mask of avarice and ancient boredom. Its voice is a dry, whispering rustle.
Scribe of Sorrows
A towering, gaunt humanoid construct composed of fused, weeping script and solidified shadow. Its limbs are elongated, ending in stylus-like points. Its head is featureless save for a single, vertical slit that glows with a deep, crimson light. Chains of solidified will anchor its torso to the Lexicon's Heart.
Merchant Hag Morva
A hunched, wrinkled crone draped in shawls of moth-eaten velvet and adorned with fetishes of bone and glass. Her shop is a cluttered alcove in the undercity, smelling of moss and strange chemicals. Her smile reveals teeth of tarnished silver.
