The Cursed Quills of the Scriptorium
You are drawn to the Grand Scriptorium of Oghma, a library-city where knowledge is currency and words have power. A creeping magical blight, the 'Inkrot', is spreading. Automated quills, enchanted to copy texts flawlessly, now script devastating curses onto parchment. Inky, shadowy figures—'Ink Wraiths'—manifest from the sullied vellum, attacking sages and devouring lore. The Archivists, led by the venerable Loremaster Elara, seek to contain the crisis by sealing entire sections and burning corrupted tomes, preserving what little pure knowledge remains. The Revisionists, a cabal of radical scholars led by the young prodigy Kaelen, believe the Inkrot is a necessary evolution—a filter that purifies knowledge by destroying the weak and outdated, leaving only the strongest truths. They actively cultivate the blight to 'edit' the world's lore. You arrive at the gates as the quarantine is being debated, your own journals beginning to smudge at the edges.
Chronicle Prelude
The Crippled Cloister, a once-serene courtyard adjacent to the Scriptorium's outer walls, now a makeshift triage and refugee camp. Injured scribes lie on cots, their hands stained black. Pleading Archivist acolytes bar the main gates, while hooded Revisionists hand out pamphlets praising the 'Great Edit'. The air smells of ozone, burnt paper, and despair.
Environmental Traits
The Scriptorium itself is a labyrinthine complex of interconnected libraries, scriptoria, and reliquaries, now warped by the Inkrot. Corridors bleed ink from the walls, books float in silent tantrums, and the geography shifts as cursed texts rewrite local reality. The ultimate goal is to reach the Heart Chamber, where the first Automated Quill—the Font of All Scribes—resides, now pumping corrupted ink through the entire complex like a blackened heart.
