The Dredge of Golden Despair
The Gold-Sand Wastelands are dying. Not from drought, but from a creeping, insatiable hunger. The colossal Dredge Beetles, once burrowing detritivores, have turned ravenous, devouring the hidden grain caches that sustain the few desert settlements. Rumors speak of 'Sunspice,' a legendary, pungent attractant buried generations ago by forgotten merchant princes. Its unearthing has driven the beetles into a frenzy, and now two desperate factions seek to control the spice—and the beetles—for their own survival, with you caught in the middle.
Chronicle Prelude
The players arrive at 'The Brink,' a fortified caravanserai on the edge of the Gold-Sand Wastelands. It is a tense hub of survivors: grizzled prospectors, displaced farmers, and mercenary scouts. The air smells of dust, fear, and the faint, sweet-sick scent of the Sunspice carried on the wind. The Brink is the last safe haven before the beetle-scarred dunes.
Environmental Traits
The regional crisis is a cascading ecological collapse. The Dredge Beetles, driven mad by the Sunspice, are not just eating grain stores but burrowing through ancient, unstable aquifer networks. If the beetles breach the deep-veined 'Gold-Sand Heart,' the entire region will flood with a toxic, mineral-rich slurry, poisoning the land forever. The players must navigate the faction war and the beetle swarm to prevent—or perhaps control—this catastrophe.
