The Oasis of the Scorpion's Kiss
The life-giving waters of the Zahara Oasis have turned lethal. Gigantic scorpions, far beyond natural size, swarm its perimeters, strangling trade and life. The ruling Merchant Council blames the Thieves' Guild of Al-Kharim, claiming they smuggled forbidden alchemical reagents that mutated the wildlife. The Guild, in turn, insists the Council is poisoning the water source to drive out independent settlers and monopolize the trade routes. Caught in the middle are the common folk and the ancient, territorial scorpions themselves. The truth is a tangled web of desperation, and the players must navigate it to survive.
Chronicle Prelude
The players arrive at the fortified settlement of Al-Kharim, a dusty trading post clinging to the edge of the Zahara Desert. The air is thick with paranoia. Merchant stalls are half-boarded, and armed guards eye everyone with suspicion. The central well, the town's lifeline, is perpetually guarded.
Environmental Traits
The Zahara Oasis, once a jewel in the desert, is now a death trap. The scorpions are growing larger and more aggressive, and their venom is evolving into a paralytic agent. The true crisis is a choice: eradicate the scorpions and risk destabilizing the desert's ecosystem, or find a way to coexist with the now-sentient hive, exposing a deeper, more horrifying conspiracy.
