The Drowned Harvest: Hippo Behemoths of the Silted River
The Halfling settlement of Willowmere, built on the banks of the once-gentle Silkenflow River, now drowns in a perpetual flood. A colossal wooden dam, built by their ancestors to tame the river and create fertile farmland, has collapsed under mysterious circumstances. The resulting chaos has attracted a herd of monstrous hippopotamuses—ancient, territorial behemoths—who now claim the flooded basin as their domain. The halflings are starving, their homes submerged, and they blame the rival Wood Elf enclave of Greenshade for sabotaging the dam. The elves, in turn, claim the dam was an abomination choking the river's natural flow and its collapse was a necessary correction. Caught in the middle are desperate halflings, zealous elves, and a herd of beasts that respect neither. The players must navigate this drowned world, uncover the dam's true fate, and decide who—if anyone—deserves the river's bounty.
Chronicle Prelude
The players arrive at the high-water mark of Willowmere. Only the upper floors of the sturdy halfling burrow-homes and the great grain silo remain above the murky, fast-moving floodwaters. Desperate halflings in small coracles wave the party down, their faces gaunt with hunger and fear. The air smells of wet earth, rotting grain, and the distant, low grunts of something massive moving in the water.
Environmental Traits
The central crisis is the catastrophic flooding of the Silkenflow River basin following the collapse of the ancient halfling dam. This has destroyed the halfling harvest, displaced the population, and created a perfect, aggressive habitat for a herd of territorial hippo behemoths. The immediate victory condition is securing a stable food source and safe ground for the surviving halflings, which requires either repairing the dam, appeasing or eliminating the hippos, or forging a desperate pact with the elves.
