The Echoing Stone Forest: Caravan of Screams
You are in the Screech Cavern, a network of tunnels where massive, agitated bats, their minds warped by unnatural ultrasonic pulses, have begun attacking the surface caravans that are the lifeblood of the Stone Forest settlements. The bats are not acting on instinct, but on command. Scholars from the Lyceum Resonant have planted ultrasonic amplifiers deep within the forest, believing they are perfecting a tool for communication and defense. The native Beast-Tamers of the Stone, however, see the pulses as a direct assault on the natural order and the sanity of their sacred beast partners. Both factions have a claim to survival, and the forest itself is a labyrinth of sound and stone that does not yield its secrets easily.
Chronicle Prelude
The Screech Cavern Outpost is a fortified settlement built into the mouth of a massive cave system. Smoke curls from chimneys, and the air is filled with the distant, maddening chittering of the bats. Caravans arrive damaged, guards nursing sonic burns, and merchants whisper of ruin if the attacks continue. Two figures watch each other warily across the central fire: a grim Beast-Tamer named Rook and a harried Lyceum Scholar named Verity.
Environmental Traits
The Echoing Stone Forest is a petrified woodland where the trees are made of a strange, resonant crystal. The deeper one goes, the more the forest amplifies and distorts sound. The ultrasonic amplifiers placed by the Lyceum Resonant are driving the native giant bats into a frenzy, causing them to assault the critical trade caravans. The players must navigate the treacherous forest, determine the cause, and decide the fate of the amplifiers—and by extension, the future of the forest and its two dependent peoples.
