The Glimmering Sickness
The Glimmering Marsh was once a place of eerie beauty, its depths illuminated by colossal, bioluminescent lantern-plants. Now, a plague of hallucinations and flesh-warping mutations spreads from its heart. A syndicate of thieves, the Glimmerway Guild, discovered how to graft the lantern-plants onto living hosts, creating invisible sentinels to guard their stolen hoard. In response, the Verdant Wardens, a druidic circle sworn to protect the marsh's natural balance, have declared a scorched-earth purge of all infected life. Caught between these two factions are the mutated common folk, neither fully human nor plant, their minds a battleground of stolen memories and botanical hunger. Veteran adventurers are hired by a desperate mayor to find a cure, but will discover the true sickness is one of choices, not spores.
Chronicle Prelude
The muddy, pallid town of Hollowfen, bordering the Glimmering Marsh. Lanterns burn low here, not from a lack of oil, but from a fear of the light that now seems to *watch*. The air smells of damp earth and a sickly-sweet floral rot. The mayor's hall is a tense hub of whispered rumors, desperate pleas from mutated families, and the grim pronouncements of visiting Verdant Wardens.
Environmental Traits
The region is on the brink of collapse. The Glimmering Sickness manifests in two stages: first, debilitating hallucinations of a lost, beautiful past; second, the physical grafting of plant matter onto skin and bone, granting a terrifying, pheromonal camouflage at the cost of one's identity. The ultimate goal is to confront the source deep within the Heartwood Grove and decide the fate of the marsh and its afflicted.
