The Mucilage Throne: Gloomfen Carnivorous Marsh
The Gloomfen Marsh is no ordinary wetland. It is a living, digesting entity—a vast, carnivorous pitcher plant the size of a kingdom, its walls of acidic mucilage and enzymatic pools dissolving all who wander too deep. The indigenous Marshfolk, survivors for generations, revere the Colossal Pitcher-Plant King as a god, believing its hunger must be sated with willing sacrifices to keep the greater swamp from 'blooming' and consuming the surrounding lands. Into this grim symbiosis crashes the Argent Cordon, a crusading order of paladins and knights who see the Marsh King as a monstrous abomination that must be purified by fire and steel. They believe the Marshfolk are its brainwashed cultists, and the only mercy is to destroy the 'god' and 'free' its people, even if it means burning the entire fen to the ground. Veteran players will find no easy answers, only a choice between two desperate, logical worldviews.
Chronicle Prelude
Players arrive at Mire's End, a fortified logging town on the edge of the Gloomfen. It is a tense hub of Marshfolk refugees fleeing the 'Deepening' (a periodic mass-growth event of the Pitcher-Plant King) and Argent Cordon soldiers establishing a forward base. The air is thick with the sweet, sickly smell of digestive enzymes and the smoke of purification pyres.
Environmental Traits
The regional crisis is the imminent 'Grand Bloom,' a catastrophic growth cycle of the Pitcher-Plant King that will cause its mucilage traps and acidic pools to expand exponentially, threatening to digest Mire's End and all surrounding settlements within a year. The Marshfolk seek to perform the Rite of Quenching, a ritual sacrifice of powerful souls to satiate the King and delay the Bloom. The Argent Cordon seeks to navigate to the King's heart-chamber and destroy it before the Bloom, an act that will trigger an immediate, violent digestion of the entire marsh, killing every living thing within it, including all Marshfolk.
