The Phantom Grove: A Tale of Scent and Sap
The air in Greatwood Village hangs thick with the sweet, cloying scent of 'Sylvan Repose', the potent incense burned by the logging guild to calm the spirits of the ancient forest they harvest. But the scent has begun to warp reality. Villagers whisper of moving trees and spectral whispers. You arrive to find the Guardian Treant of the wood, Oakfather, not raging against the loggers, but locked in a fevered hallucination, its limbs thrashing not at the living, but at phantoms only it perceives. The source of its madness—and the key to stopping its destructive sleepwalk—lies in the heart of the conflict between the guild's desperate need and the forest's dying plea.
Chronicle Prelude
Greatwood Village is a tense frontier settlement. On one side, the hulking, silent sawmills of the Lumber Consortium sit at the edge of the treeline, their air choked with fragrant smoke. On the other, the village proper clings to a sense of normalcy, though its people wear masks of wet cloth and avoid looking at the forest after dusk. The Oakfather's recent 'episode' has left a swath of shattered homes on the village's forestward edge, a grim testament to the unseen enemy.
Environmental Traits
The Oakfather's hallucinations are causing catastrophic, unpredictable destruction. The Consortium blames 'forest madness' and seeks to fell the treant permanently to protect their investment and the village. The forest's defenders, the Verdant Whisper, believe the Consortium's incense is poisoning the ancient spirit and seek to destroy the incense production at its source, even if it means burning the Consortium out. Both sides are willing to use extreme measures, and both have a kernel of truth.
