The Rot Beneath the Floorboards
You are not heroes called by prophecy, but the last desperate measure of a dying town. The Granary of Oakhaven, the heart of the region's food supply, is infested. Not by goblins or bandits, but by a swarm of mutated rats that have burrowed deep, and something far older has stirred beneath the ancient floorboards. Two factions offer divergent paths to salvation, each with blood on their hands. The air smells of decay, grain dust, and moral compromise.
Chronicle Prelude
The Town Square of Oakhaven, a once-prosperous farming community now gripped by panic. The massive, timber-framed Granary looms at its center, its doors barred and guarded by grim-faced volunteers. Rats skitter in the gutters, bolder each day. The town's two remaining leaders, the Agrarian and the Preservationist, argue over the dwindling food stores and the fate of the Granary itself.
Environmental Traits
The infestation is not merely an inconvenience; it is a slow-motion catastrophe. The mutated rat swarm is consuming and corrupting the entire season's grain. Worse, the swarm is merely the symptom, drawn to a deeper rot: a forgotten, subterranean vault of 'preserved' cheeses and alchemical reagents that has begun to leak a mutagenic, psychic spore. The true threat is the source of the spores—a dormant, fungal intelligence awakening in the dark. The crisis will end with either the cleansing fire of sacrifice or the desperate embrace of a symbiotic, alien bargain.
