The Sanguine Swamps: Livestock Stranglings & The Buried Chalice
Livestock are found strangled by pulsing, blood-red vines in the Sanguine Swamps, and whispers speak of a buried chalice of immense power. Veteran players are hired to investigate, but they'll uncover a conflict between desperate settlers and ancient, territorial fey who see the swamp as a living entity. The 'Sacrificial Chalice' is not a treasure, but a keystone in a fragile ecological balance, and its disturbance threatens to unleash the swamp's true, monstrous hunger.
Chronicle Prelude
The party arrives at the frontier settlement of Willowmere, a cluster of damp, thatched-roof buildings built on stilts at the edge of the Sanguine Swamps. The air is thick with the scent of peat and fear. The local livestock—goats, pigs, and cattle—are being found dead, strangled by thick, crimson vines that retract into the muck by dawn. The townsfolk are terrified, and the local elder has pooled resources to hire outside help.
Environmental Traits
The entire Sanguine Swamps is a single, vast organism. The 'Blood-Vines' are its circulatory system, the ancient trees its bones, and the central 'Heartwood' its soul. The Sacrificial Chalice, buried beneath the roots of the Heartwood, is a ritual focus used for centuries by the swamp's guardians to siphon off the entity's violent impulses. Its recent exposure and corruption are causing the entity to lash out, strangling the livestock as a symptom of its pain and rage. If the chalice is not restored or destroyed, the swamp will fully awaken, consuming the settlement and all within it.
