As famine looms, a desperate coalition of farmers, the Verdant Keepers, seeks to eradicate the beetles. But their methods threaten to destabilize the volcano's delicate geothermal vents, potentially triggering a cataclysm. Opposing them are the Ashen Pathfinders, a guild of delvers and scholars who believe the beetles are a symptom, not the cause. They preach harvesting the sacred Hearth-Core Shards, stolen by greedy adventurers, to restore the mountain's balance and naturally cull the swarm. The truth lies buried deep, where magma flows, ancient rituals were performed, and the land itself is screaming.

Chronicle Prelude

The players arrive at the fortified agricultural outpost of Ember Hold, a soot-stained town clinging to the volcano's lower slopes. Smoke rises from dozens of chimneys, but the fields beyond lie barren, chewed to stalks. The air smells of ash and desperation. Townsfolk eye newcomers with suspicion, while a tense standoff is evident between the uniformed Verdant Keepers and the rugged Ashen Pathfinders near the town gate.

Environmental Traits

The Cinder Volcano is experiencing an ecological collapse triggered by the theft of its Hearth-Core Shards—lifeforce-anchoring geodes stolen by previous adventurers and sold on the black market. Without them, the volcano's geothermal energy is wild and unbalanced, causing the Magma Beetle swarm to overpopulate and destabilize. The regional crisis is famine and potential volcanic eruption. The ultimate goal is to restore balance by deciding the fate of the remaining shards: return them to the mountain's heart, use them to empower a desperate faction, or destroy them to break the cycle forever.
