The Serpentine Caverns: Gold, Scales, and Sacrifice
For months, the livestock of the frontier town of Dusthaven has vanished into the night, dragged into the labyrinthine Serpentine Caverns by monstrous rock pythons. The townsfolk are starving, their pleas to the capital unanswered. But the Caverns are not a simple lair; they are a sacred, millennia-old temple-complex to the yuan-ti god Merrshaulk, tended by the Scaled Communion. The snakes are not merely beasts—they are guardians, empowered by the ritual circles that now pulse with stolen gold. The yuan-ti see the livestock as a necessary tithe to appease their god and hold back a far worse darkness seeping up from the deep earth. To save Dusthaven is to defile a religion; to honor the caverns is to condemn a people.
Chronicle Prelude
The players arrive in Dusthaven, a dusty, desperate frontier town built around a dried oasis. It is surrounded by defensive walls of packed earth and sharpened stakes, now pockmarked with holes from snake attacks. The air smells of fear, sweat, and slaughtered animals. A small, disorganized militia patrols the perimeter, but their eyes are hollow with exhaustion. The town well is nearly dry, and the granaries are empty. A pall of hopelessness hangs over everything.
Environmental Traits
The Serpentine Caverns are undergoing a cataclysmic ritual cycle. The yuan-ti priests are using stolen livestock gold, melted into discs, to power ancient ward-stones that hold back a creeping, sanity-eroding fungal blight from the deepest dark—the 'Whispering Rot.' If the ritual fails, the blight will surface, consuming all life in the region. If it succeeds, Dusthaven will starve. The players are caught in the middle of this slow-motion ecological and theological disaster.
