The Shattered Aegis of Thorn Hold
The fortress of Thorn Hold, a bastion against the encroaching Miasma Wastes, has fallen into disarray. Its legendary automated ballista network, the 'Aegis Salvo System,' has gone haywire, firing lethal salvos indiscriminately into the surrounding valleys and even at allied patrols. The cause: the 'Antiaircraft Readiness Directive,' a complex magical protocol, was misconfigured during a drunken lapse by the now-disgraced Defense Captain. With the fortress's defenses turned against its own people, two factions clash over how to resolve the crisis—one seeking immediate, destructive mercy, the other demanding a perilous, methodical salvation. Veteran players must navigate a fortress under self-siege, making choices where every action has bloody consequences.
Chronicle Prelude
Players arrive at the refugee-choked Waystation of Ashenvale, a day's travel from Thorn Hold. The air is thick with smoke from distant, automated fires and the moans of the wounded. Haggard soldiers from the fortress mingle with desperate civilians, all bearing tales of metallic storm and betrayal. The true nature of the crisis is revealed in fragments, forcing players to piece together the tragedy before deciding their approach.
Environmental Traits
The core conflict is the rogue Aegis Salvo System, a network of arcane repeater ballistas that now targets all movement in the Thornspire Valley. The fortress is effectively under a self-imposed siege. The ultimate goal is to reach the Central Command Spire within Thorn Hold and either disable, recalibrate, or subvert the system, deciding the fate of the hundreds of soldiers and civilians trapped within.
