The Shattered Sky-Herds of Windy Crest
The famed pegasus herds of Windy Crest Ranch are breaking their tethers, flying into a frenzy and attacking travelers. The rancher, a reclusive herbalist named Elara, insists her experimental, prohibited 'Calmroot' tonic is the only way to manage the increasingly aggressive creatures. A rival faction of sky-knights and beast-scholars, the Aether Wardens, believe Elara's tonic is an unnatural corruption that must be eradicated, even if it means culling the herd. The truth is a deadly middle ground: the tonic is a desperate, addictive sedative masking a magical plague spreading from a corrupted leyline nexus beneath the ranch, a plague that drives pegasi to madness. Players are caught between two desperate groups, each with a piece of the puzzle and a willingness to fight for their version of salvation.
Chronicle Prelude
Windy Crest Ranch, a sprawling, wind-battered collection of stables, paddocks, and a central farmhouse perched on high cliffs overlooking the sea. The air smells of ozone, hay, and something faintly metallic. The remaining tethered pegasi shift nervously, their eyes wild. Rancher Elara tends to a patch of strange, glowing herbs in a fenced-off garden, while a contingent of the Aether Wardens' sky-riders circles ominously overhead, demanding she cease her work.
Environmental Traits
A magical plague, the 'Skyrot,' is emanating from a sealed, ancient fey nexus hidden beneath the ranch. It infects pegasi, driving them to madness and causing their tethers to snap. Rancher Elara's tonic temporarily suppresses symptoms but is addictive and weakening the creatures' natural resistance. The Aether Wardens seek to destroy the tonic source and cull infected beasts to prevent the plague from spreading to other flying mounts, but they are ignorant of the true source. The ultimate resolution lies in reaching the nexus and choosing how to deal with the plague's origin, saving the herd or sacrificing it to seal the corruption forever.
