The great Abjuration Workshop of the Arcanum, a fortress of layered magical defenses, has catastrophically failed. Its ultimate force-wall collapsed inward, not from external assault, but from a flaw in its very foundation—a foundation that has been secretly hollowed out by a vast, ancient colony of phase-ants. The resulting magical implosion has warped the Workshop into a death-trap of unstable wards, wild magic surges, and exposed ant-tunnels. Two desperate factions now race to claim the Workshop's core, the 'Aegis Heart,' for opposing reasons, and the players are caught in the collapsing middle.
Chronicle Prelude
The Shattered Anteroom: You stand in the outer reception hall of the Arcanum's Abjuration Workshop. The air hums with residual energy, and cracks spiderweb across once-invisible force-walls. Debris from the upper levels rains down intermittently. Two hastily established camps face each other across the rubble-choked central aisle: the grim, disciplined ranks of the Wardens of the Arcanum and the ragged, determined collective of the Hollowed Refugees.
Environmental Traits
The region is in magical and structural collapse. The Wardens seek to salvage the Aegis Heart to re-establish containment and seal the breach, believing the ant-colony is a monstrous infestation that must be eradicated. The Refugees, whose subterranean home was the ant-colony, believe the ants are a sentient, symbiotic species and that the Workshop's collapse was justice for the Arcanum's centuries of magical exploitation of the land's ley-lines. The path forward leads down into the war-torn, magically unstable depths.
