The Gold-Sand Wastelands are dying. A plague of massive, burrowing Dredge Beetles is devouring the last of the ancient grain reserves buried beneath the dunes, a lifeline for the scattered desert settlements. The beetles are drawn by an unearthly aroma—a rare, psychoactive spice buried by a lost caravan merchant guild centuries ago. Your party arrives at the parched settlement of Dusthaven, caught between two desperate factions: the Dust Wardens, who believe the beetles must be exterminated at any cost to save the grain, and the Sand Scavengers, who claim the spice is a divine gift that can be harvested to grant visions and power, and that the beetles are merely its sacred guardians.

Chronicle Prelude

You stand in the crumbling adobe courtyard of Dusthaven, the last major outpost before the deep waste. The air is thick with dust and desperation. Two banners hang from opposing watchtowers: one depicting a stylized beetle impaled on a spear (Dust Wardens), the other a spiraling, glowing seed (Sand Scavengers). The grain silos are nearly empty, and the ground trembles periodically from the distant burrowing of the Dredge Beetles.

Environmental Traits

The Gold-Sand Wastelands face ecological and societal collapse. The Dredge Beetles, once dormant, have been agitated by the spice's potent scent. The party must navigate the desert's hazards, the beetles' territory, and the escalating conflict between the Wardens and Scavengers to determine the region's fate: either secure the grain for survival, or claim the spice for power, knowing both paths have irreversible consequences.

A small, dirty child with large, wary eyes peering out from under a tangled mop of hair. Their clothes are little more than rags, and they are painfully thin. They clutch a small, carved wooden beetle toy.
Scavenger Guard Captain
