The Unlocked Casements of Shadowkeep

# Investigation# Social# Dark Fantasy# Intrigue

The wind-harried stones of Shadowkeep have long guarded the treacherous Skyreach Pass. For generations, the keep's garrison has repelled monstrous harpies, cliff drakes, and worse from the civilized lands below. But for the past three moons, a new terror has struck: a pack of spectral, winged panthers—Midnight Shades—assault the keep with unnatural precision, slipping through supposedly sealed casements. The Castellan, a grim veteran named Valerius Kane, claims the creatures are a fey scourge that must be eradicated. But whispers among the garrison speak of Kane intentionally leaving certain windows unlocked on nights of assault, creating sacrificial corridors. The truth is a knot of desperation, betrayal, and a pact gone wrong. The party arrives as newly hired reinforcements, drawn into a web where every ally has a secret, and the monsters may be the least of the dangers.

The muddy, fortified bailey of Shadowkeep, perched precariously on a cliff edge. Smoke from extinguished fires mingles with the ever-present sea mist. Soldiers with haunted eyes repair shattered palisades. The air smells of salt, blood, and fear. The party is greeted by a harried Sergeant of the Watch, tasked with helping investigate the pattern of the attacks.

The regional crisis is a brutal siege from the feywild bleeding into the material plane. The Midnight Shades are not random beasts but bound entities, their assaults a direct consequence of a broken bargain between the Castellan and a powerful, vengeful Archfey known as the Prince of Thorns. The keep itself is a microcosm of a larger conflict, and the party's actions will determine whether the fey incursion is contained, appeased, or if Shadowkeep falls, opening the Skyreach Pass to horrors from both worlds.
