The war-wargs of Blackrock Keep, once loyal beasts of siege and patrol, are turning feral. Their magical tethers snap under inexplicable strain, and handlers whisper of beasts seeing phantom foes. In the grim stables, a conspiracy festers: the grooms are blending cheap, hallucinogenic straw-chaff into the feed, a desperate act to keep the wargs docile against a creeping madness from the old keep's foundations. Two factions rise from the hay and shadow: the Keep's Garrison, who see the wargs as failing weapons that must be culled and replaced, and the Groom's Circle, who believe the wargs are victims of the keep's own haunted stones and must be cured, not killed. The players are caught in the middle, hired to investigate the 'defective beasts' but drawn into a struggle for the very soul of the garrison.

Chronicle Prelude

The Courtyard of Blackrock Keep, a grim, fortified bastion carved into a mountain spur. The air smells of iron, beast, and old fear. Wargs pace nervously in reinforced pens, their handlers eyeing them with a mix of pity and dread. The central well is dry, rumored to be sealed after 'incidents' decades past.

Environmental Traits

The keep is a pressure cooker. The garrison fears a beast uprising that will see them overrun from within while the frontier burns. The grooms see their charges, intelligent and tormented, being condemned for a sickness not their own. The solution lies buried beneath the keep's foundations, in the sealed tunnels where the first wargs were bred, and where a terrible secret now whispers up through the stone.

Sergeant Garrick
A muscular, grim-faced soldier in full garrison plate, his helmet obscuring all but a pair of cold, determined eyes. He leads a squad of armed soldiers and carries a heavy crossbow and a mace. He exudes ruthless efficiency.
Old Tom
A hunched, elderly groom with rheumy eyes and trembling hands. He wears faded, patched-up stable clothes and constantly wrings his hat in his fingers. He speaks in a low, fearful whisper.
Dire Warg Alpha
A massive, scarred warg with matted black fur and one torn ear. Its eyes glow with a faint, unsettling psychic light, and it paces restlessly, emitting low growls. It is clearly agitated and dangerous, but also intelligent.
The Warg-Spirit
A horrifying, spectral amalgam of countless translucent warg forms, flickering and merging in a cacophony of psychic howls. It coalesces around the pulsating Heartstone, its form shifting between individual beasts and a single, massive entity of pure psychic rage and sorrow.
