A stagecoach arrives in Calico Springs. The driver is found deceased. The passenger strongbox has been forced open. The official manifest is missing a page. An independent investigator must examine the physical evidence and the contradictory accounts of the surviving passengers to reconstruct the events.
Initial Crime Scene
The heavy, leather-bound cargo log lies open on the driver's bench, its spine showing a ragged, torn edge. The acrid tang of dust and old sweat hangs in the air. The creaking of a loose floorboard under a boot heel echoes from the common room. The single shaft of light from the window catches glinting motes over a wax-sealed document on the counter. The walls are sun-bleached adobe, and a worn daguerreotype lies beside the manifest.
Crime Scene Environment
The lighting is a high-angle, glare-heavy sun-bleached light casting long, stark shadows. The humidity is parched, and the temperature is arid. The acoustic density is a heavy-booted silence, punctuated only by the creaking of wood and the distant, hollow whisper of wind through cracks.
Investigation Constraints
Era-specific mechanical locks (wafer tumbler, warded), hand-cranked telegraph machines, manual printing presses, hand-drawn maps, vintage surveying equipment, wax-sealed documents, mechanical cash registers, and primitive revolver mechanisms.
