The Dent in the Marshal's Boot
A federal investigator arrives in a frontier town to find the local sheriff dead. The investigation reveals a community where personal secrets have created a tangled web of secondary crimes and alibis.
Initial Crime Scene
The floorboards groan under your boots. A sharp, medicinal odor of carbolic acid cuts through the air, layered over the scent of dust and old gun oil. Three visual markers dominate the room: a deep, permanent boot-heel depression in the sun-baked adobe floor, a lopsided framed tintype on the wall, and the scuffed floorboard patterns showing evasive footwork near the door.
Crime Scene Environment
The lighting is a harsh, single-source glare from a grimy window, casting long shadows. The air is dust-choked and dry, with a persistent acoustic density from the distant river's gurgle and the ominous creak of floorboards under movement.
Investigation Constraints
Late 1800s frontier technology: six-shooters, lever-action rifles, hand-cranked telegraphs, oil lamps, manual printing presses, horse-drawn transport, wooden locks with iron keys, handwritten ledgers and journals, charcoal rubbings for copying documents.
