A routine pastry evaluation at a small-town bakery is disrupted by a kitchen fire and a missing judge's notebook. An independent investigator is called to untangle the sequence of events within the establishment and its surrounding areas.
Initial Crime Scene
The first breath inside the kitchen is scorched and sweet, a layered assault of acrid burnt pastry and the fermented odor of spilled preserves. A mechanical bell, now silent, hangs overhead, its clapper still. Flour-dusted floorboards show a chaos of overlapping footprints and a gritty, sandy spill that crunches underfoot near the large coal-fired oven.
Crime Scene Environment
The kitchen's lighting is uneven, a mix of dim daylight from a high window and the flickering glow of an oven's dying coals. The air is warm and humid, thick with particulate flour and lingering smoke.
