The Gilded Cage's Silence
The owner of a prosperous saloon is found deceased in his locked private office. An investigator enters to discern the truth from the accounts of five local figures, each possessing their own financial or professional entanglements, to determine whose personal crisis intersected with the fatal event.
Initial Crime Scene
The warped, multi-pane mirror behind the bar throws back a distorted reflection of your own coat, splitting your image into three gaunt, gilded specters. A heavy silence hangs in the air, thick with the dust motes swirling in the single beam of light from a high, grimy window. The creak of a settling beam echoes from the back, a low, thirsty groan that seems to come from the walls themselves.
Crime Scene Environment
The lighting profile is one of deep, gaudy shadows, pierced by isolated pools of yellow light from oil lamps that leave the corners in heavy, creaking darkness. The humidity is low and the air is dusty, creating a thirsty atmosphere that clings to the throat. Acoustic density is high; every footstep, breath, and distant sound is amplified by the silent, still air, making the space feel heavy and treacherous.
Investigation Constraints
Black-powder revolvers, lever-action rifles, hand-cranked printing presses, telegraph machines, manual combination safes, oil lamps, pocket watches, hand-drawn maps, ledger books, and mechanical door locks with simple tumbler mechanisms.
