The Basilisk's Basking: Sarcophagus of the Petrified River
Deep beneath the earth, the River of Whispers has turned to stone. Its once-flowing waters now lie as a petrified, grotesque statue of frozen creatures and suspended debris, a permanent scar on the Underdark. The cause is rumored to be illegal alchemical runoff from gnome outposts, a byproduct of their desperate mining operations. But the petrification has awakened something ancient: a Basilisk Broodmother nesting in the river's sarcophagus, her gaze feeding on the residual magic. You are caught between the gnomes' survival and the Underdark's ecological wrath, where every choice petrifies or liberates.
Chronicle Prelude
You emerge into the Shattered Geode, a neutral trading post carved from a giant, hollow geode. Its crystalline walls refract dim light, casting rainbows over mushroom groves and tense market stalls. The air hums with the distant, muffled thunder of underground rivers—or what's left of them. Here, factions eye each other from a distance, and whispers of the 'Stone River' curse are the only common tongue.
Environmental Traits
The Underdark's natural cycle is choking. The petrified River of Whispers is both a symptom and a catalyst, as its stony form blocks vital ley lines, causing cavern collapses and mutant flora/fauna. If the Basilisk Broodmother fully awakens and multiplies, entire regions will be permanently petrified. The gnomes' alchemical operations are the only known source of the petrifying agent, but shutting them down would doom their clan to starvation and the deeper darknesses that hunt them.
