The Golden Plains Conflict: Owlbear, Rancher, and the Watcher's Mistake
The fertile Golden Plains, a patchwork of ranches and wild grasslands, are dying. A strange blight withers crops, and the great Owlbear herds, once a managed part of the ecosystem, grow aggressive, preying on cattle. The frontier ranchers, led by the stubborn Elias Thorne, blame the secretive Grove Wardens for failing to control the beasts. When a Warden emissary is found shot dead on Thorne's land—mistaken for a beast in the mist—both sides draw blades. You arrive in the crossfire, hired by a neutral merchant guild to secure trade routes, but you will be forced to navigate a web of blame, ecological collapse, and a shared, hidden enemy.
Chronicle Prelude
The frontier hub of Dusthaven, a dusty crossroads town built around a fortified trading post. Ranchers, hunters, and a handful of Grove Wardens eye each other warily. The air smells of cattle, dry grass, and tension. A 'Wanted' poster for a 'Cattle-Slayer Owlbear' is nailed to the post office, scribbled over with accusations against the Wardens.
Environmental Traits
A severe ecological crisis, the 'Gray Rot,' is secretly poisoning the plains, driving the normally symbiotic Owlbears to desperation. The immediate victory condition is to discover the blight's source and broker a peace, but the factions' hatred may force you to choose a side in a violent reckoning.
