The Petrified Caravan & the Gnomish Blight
The vital trade artery of the Underdark river, the Sulfurflow, is choked. A merchant caravan bearing rare surface spices has been found entirely petrified, its guards frozen in terror, their cargo fused into calcified lumps. Rumors whisper of a basilisk infestation, but the stench clinging to the petrified figures is not of beasts, but of alchemical runoff. The Gnomish settlement of Clickhaven, nestled in a nearby cavern, has been expanding its luminescent fungal farms and 'improving' its sewage output for years. To the Deep Gnomes of the Svirfneblin Enclave upstream, this is an existential poison. The path to truth lies not in simple monster slaying, but in navigating the desperate needs of two communities who both believe they are fighting for survival.
Chronicle Prelude
The player party arrives at the neutral river-port hub of Mudhaven, a muddy, bustling settlement built on stilts over the sluggish Sulfurflow. The air is thick with the scent of damp earth, fish, and a faint, acrid chemical tang. The petrified caravan is on display in the central square, a grim monument. Factions are already whispering, assigning blame, and hiring blades.
Environmental Traits
The Sulfurflow river basin is a critical, contested resource. The Gnomish settlement of Clickhaven produces vital alchemical reagents and food, but its waste is mutating the local fauna and poisoning the water. The Svirfneblin Enclave downstream depends on pure water for its own delicate ecosystem and sacred rituals. The petrifications are a horrifying symptom of a deeper, escalating conflict where both sides have legitimate claims to the land and resources, and both are capable of extreme measures.
