Chronicle Prelude

Riverbend: A damp, anxious settlement built on stilts over the Darkwater's murky banks. The air smells of wet clay and fear. Stone statues of livestock and a few frozen-in-terror villagers line the path to the communal well—the 'Basilisk Watering Hole'—which is now guarded and avoided. Miners from the upstream settlement of Grimehall come to trade, their skin often bearing strange, crystalline rashes.

A cascading ecological and alchemical disaster has turned the Darkwater River basin into a battleground for survival. The river is poisoned upstream by a profitable but toxic mineral spring operation, and its waters petrify those who drink downstream.
