The Rootbound Sentinel
The ancient Greatwood Keep, once a bastion of nature's guardianship, is now a twisted monument to symbiotic decay. The 'Guardian Vine Sentry-Drops,' living, semi-sentient defensive flora, have begun to wither, their sap turning toxic and aggressive. At the heart of this crisis lies the 'Potent Pruning Elixirs,' alchemical brews controlled by a sect of druids known as the Adjutant, who believe controlled amputation is the only path to save the whole. From the shadows, the 'Cult of the Unpruned Root' whispers that the Adjutant's cuts are the true poison, that the Keep must be allowed to reclaim its wild, untamed state, even if it means consuming everything within. You are trapped within the outer bailey, the Keep's great gates sealed by a wall of thorny, animate wood. To survive and escape, you must navigate this fractured ecosystem and choose a side in a war where both factions believe they are saving the world.
Chronicle Prelude
The Outer Bailey & Withered Gardens: A crumbling courtyard choked by dead vines and the skeletal remains of sentry-drops. The air smells of rot and ozone. A single, massive gate of living wood, now dormant, blocks the exit. Several faction representatives and desperate survivors mill about, seeking aid or offering cryptic guidance.
Environmental Traits
The Greatwood Keep is a living, dying organism. The Guardian Vine Sentry-Drops, once loyal defenders, are now unstable bioweapons. The central crisis is a symbiotic plague: the vines are sick, the Adjutant's pruning elixirs are the only known treatment but they cause horrific mutation in overuse, and the Cult believes the cure is worse than the disease. The ultimate goal is to reach the Heartwood Sanctum at the Keep's core and confront the source of the blight—the ancient, semi-divine Treant that is the Keep's founder—and either stabilize it or end its suffering.
