The Shattered Vigil of Thorn Hold
The fortress of Thorn Hold stands as a monument to paranoid genius and catastrophic failure. Its legendary Automated Antiaircraft Ballista Network, once the realm's greatest deterrent, now spins in a deadly, uncontrolled loop, firing upon anything that moves—friend, foe, or wildlife—across the surrounding Thornwood. The surviving garrison is pinned within their own walls, starving, while the countryside is strangled by a rain of bolts. The Drunken Defense Captain who misconfigured the system in a grief-stricken stupor is dead, but his terminal error persists. You are the mercenary crew hired by a desperate Crown envoy to break the siege of madness, but you will find no simple villains here, only broken people clinging to broken solutions in a fortress that has become its own enemy.
Chronicle Prelude
You arrive at the smoldering outer hamlet of Thorn's End, the last 'safe' settlement before the kill zone. Here, Crown Loyalist refugees and a suspiciously well-equipped Church of the Forgemaster contingent have set up rival camps, each blaming the other for the Hold's continued defiance and offering radically different 'solutions' to the crisis.
Environmental Traits
The central crisis is a feedback loop: the Ballista Network is locked in a defensive protocol, draining the fortress's power and firing continuously. This has created a three-way siege: the automated defenses hold the garrison hostage, the garrison's desperation threatens a violent breakout that would shatter the region, and external factions are maneuvering to either seize or salvage the priceless ancient weaponry at the heart of the Hold.
