The Stone Carapace Gambit
The vital trade route through the Stonecarapace Pass has been severed. The colossal, dormant rock tortoise that served as the region's living bridge has been awakened and turned into a mobile fortress by the 'Carapace Collective,' a faction of desperate frontiersmen. They use potent soporific lures to drive the beast and ambush all who approach. The rival 'Dust Wardens,' a pragmatic ranger guild, seek to slay the tortoise to restore the road, condemning the Collective's families to die in the wilderness. Your party is caught in the middle, forced to navigate a broken landscape where the only path forward is through, or over, a walking mountain.
Chronicle Prelude
The player party arrives at the besieged frontier outpost of 'Broken-Bridge Station,' a collection of crumbling caravanserais and watchtowers clinging to the edge of a massive chasm. The station is a tense hub of refugees, desperate merchants, and wary Wardens, all watching the distant, shifting silhouette of the colossal rock tortoise on the far plateau.
Environmental Traits
The tortoise, 'Old Shellback,' now roams a labyrinthine badlands of canyons and mesas, its movement unpredictably blocking passages and creating new ones. The Collective's soporific lures emit a pollen-like spore that induces drowsiness and hallucinations, while the Wardens have fortified key chokepoints with lethal traps. The region is a gauntlet of natural hazards, faction patrols, and the ever-present, ground-shaking threat of the tortoise itself.
