The scent of ammonia, sharp and chemical, cuts through the beeswax polish lingering in the air. A single gas lamp with a green glass shade casts a focused pool of light over a small writing desk. A dark, rectangular shadow on the polished mahogany sideboard marks a significant absence, its outline sharp against the wood's deep grain.
