The Draft from the Hearthstone
The patriarch of a fading estate is found dead in his study. An unnatural, localized cold spot near the fireplace has given rise to talk of hauntings. The investigation must disentangle overlapping personal crises—mounting debts, household pilfering, a secret liaison—to reconstruct the sequence of events from the physical evidence and conflicting accounts.
Initial Crime Scene
The heavy scent of musty leather and old paper is the first thing to register. From the hallway comes the muffled, persistent ticking of a grandfather clock. The kerosene lantern on the desk throws long, dancing shadows that make the oaken paneled walls seem to breathe. A profound, unnatural chill seizes the air near the cold fireplace, a whispering draft that stirs the fine dust on the hearthstone's surface.
Crime Scene Environment
A sepulchral stillness pervades the manor, broken only by the creaking of floorboards and the distant clattering of the weather vane in the wind. The air is cool and damp, carrying a foreboding density of silence. Lighting is provided solely by kerosene lanterns and the grey dusk filtering through leaded windows, casting deep, oaken shadows.
Investigation Constraints
Kerosene lanterns, hand-wound clocks, quill pens and ledger books, basic mechanical locks with skeleton keys, hand-pumped water wells, horse-drawn transport, telegraph office in town. No electricity or advanced machinery.
