The Hearthstone Presence
A winter night at a remote frontier manor concludes with a death and a patch of fur on the rug. The isolated guests present conflicting accounts of the evening, each with their own professional and social stakes in the outcome.
Initial Crime Scene
A sharp smell of cold gun-oil and old hearth smoke hits first. The room's only light is an oil lamp on a heavy oak desk, casting long, trembling shadows across scattered, torn diary pages on the floorboards. Three visual markers dominate: a cold iron fireplace poker leaning against the hearth, muddy boot prints stamped across a torn page, and a compass needle swinging erratically near a section of loose floorboard.
Crime Scene Environment
The initial scene is lit by a single oil lamp, creating pools of deep shadow and weak amber circles. The air is dry and poker-chip cold, carrying the faint, bitter scent of coal smoke. Acoustic density is low, defined by the slow, heavy tick of a mechanical clock and the groan of old timber in the wind.
Investigation Constraints
Pre-electric frontier technology: oil lamps, hand-cranked telegraph, horse-drawn transport, black powder firearms, mechanical locks with exposed tumblers, handwritten ledgers and diaries, mechanical clocks, manual well pumps, coal-burning stoves, and hand-forged iron tools.
