When the SS Vellara makes port, a discrepancy is found in the inventory of a lifeboat's provisions. An independent investigator is tasked with examining the ship's logs, personal accounts, and physical spaces to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to a missing passenger and to understand the network of individual circumstances aboard.
Initial Crime Scene
The threshold is crossed into the aft cabin. The air carries the heavy, sweet chemical odor of spilled brandy, soaked deep into the timber grain. A distinct, high-pitched creak answers each step on a specific deckboard, its acoustic signature sharper than the surrounding groaning timber. Whale-oil lantern light catches the salt-crusted surface of a ledger on a central desk. The flickering shadow of a polished brass barometer housing dances on a wood-paneled wall. A thick, tallow-stained thumb-smear obscures a column in an open inventory book.
Crime Scene Environment
The sandbox is a zone of dim, static whale-oil illumination, casting long, deep shadows. The ambient humidity is high, a constant brine-soaked dampness that clings to all surfaces and thickens the air. The acoustic density is oppressive, filled with the low-frequency groaning of timber under strain, punctuated by the isolated, high-frequency creaks of specific joints and the whispering rigging above. The tonal vocabulary dictates an atmosphere of salt-crusted surfaces, gale-haunted silence, and ominous, persistent cold.
